What's the Endocannabinoid System?

Learn More About the System

Your body is made up of a number of different systems, such as the nervous system, digestive system, respiratory system, and others. These systems help our bodies to regulate themselves and achieve a state of homeostasis. When our bodies are not at homeostasis, we begin to notice problems like sickness and fever. The endocannabinoid system, then, is a hormone regulator that keeps our bodies in balance by regulating such functions as appetite, memory, immune function, and more.

What Are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are chemicals that affect the mind and body. Endocannabinoids are those produced from within the body, and phytocannabinoids are those which come from the cannabis plant. Once marijuana was subjected to modern research, the field of medicine drastically changed.

Scientists saw that cannabinoids could help regulate the nervous system and the immune system, and that cannabinoids played a large role in feelings of well-being. One endocannabinoid called anandamide, for example, is now known to help people feel euphoria following exercise. While THC and CBD are the most recognizable cannabinoids, there are over 100 of them.

Maintaining Endocannabinoid Health

Like other hormones in the body, the endocannabinoid system secretes chemicals throughout different parts of the body to keep everything in balance. When the endocannabinoid system is out of balance, people may suffer from conditions like migraines, fibromyalgia, anxiety, digestive disorders, and more. In order to maintain homeostasis, some doctors now prescribe cannabidiol or hemp oil.

Modern Treatments using the Endocannabinoid System

Because the endocannabinoid system helps regulate brain activity, cannabidiol (CBD) has earned a high spot on the list of drugs used to manage neurological conditions. Diseases such as Parkinson’s, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and anxiety respond positively to the use of CBD and hemp oil.
