Neuromodulation Therapy in Monmouth County

What Is Neuromodulation Therapy?

Neuromodulation is a medical treatment where electrical signals are sent to specific areas of the brain in order to stimulate areas where there are irregularities to prevent seizures from spreading and/or to decrease the frequency and intensity of seizures. Responsive neurostimulation neuromodulation acts more like a pacemaker by sending signals to the nerves themselves in response to hyperactive electrical activity that is continuously being monitored by the neuromodulatory device. Neuromodulation is an advance from vagal nerve stimulation, which is still performed where the vagus nerve in the neck is stimulated with electricity to help decrease seizure frequency and intensity.

Amor Mehta MD – Neurology Center for Epilepsy & Seizures, LLC can help residents throughout New Jersey with their neurological conditions by diagnosing your issue and treating it with modern techniques, if you are a candidate for this sort of therapy.

How Does Neuromodulation Work?

By attaching electrodes to the nerves, patients can regulate their brain activity, in some cases at will. Depending on the solution, an electrical charge may be sent out constantly, and in other cases, only before a seizure is about to begin. Neuromodulation helps to limit the irregular electrical activity that can spread into other areas of the brain.

One of the main benefits of this approach is that the patient does not suffer the common side effects of both medication and surgery (with post-operative problems resulting from the resection of brain tissue). While neuromodulation can be used with anti-epilepsy drugs, its own effects have proven to be beneficial to epilepsy patients. Responsive neurostimulation is still in the early years and its usage will become more global with time. At NCES, we can help you understand the risks you face and what happens during the procedure.
